Some of Johnson’s detractors think he’ll still win

Some potential Republican holdouts are signaling they’re preparing for Mike Johnson to win the speaker’s gavel Friday, in a positive shift for Johnson as his speakership hangs in the balance.

Some of the Louisianan’s detractors have privately said that they will “vote for Trump’s agenda,” making clear that they will either support Johnson on the first ballot or at least after the first few rounds of voting, according to three Republicans familiar with the conversations who were granted anonymity to candidly discuss them.

However, key holdout Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) has not yet privately expressed that same sentiment, four Republicans similarly granted anonymity said.

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.), another remaining holdout, said Friday at the Capitol that he thinks Johnson will be elected — “it just depends on if it’s going to be one or three” rounds of voting.

Freedom Caucus members are meeting with Johnson Friday morning.
